... during Christmas time

I found this wonderful  Christmas meme some weeks ago at Dorothy's blog The Kindled Scholar. It took me some time to answer those questions and now I would like to share my answers with all of you. You can take this meme with you and answer it yourself. It is great fun!

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
I would say Hot Chocolate because there is nothing better than chocolate. But during Christmas time I am a fan of punch in all varieties. Here in Austria there are booth selling punch at our Christmas Markets are there you can buy combinations like Vanilla Peach, Chocolate and Cherries, Baileys or Berries. That is THE perfect drink during Christmas time.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Once again things are a bit different here in Austria. We don’t believe in Santa. We think that our presents are brought by a little angel and its helpers. But they definitely wrap the presents. And I am pretty sure that Santa wraps them too. It’s just good manners to bring present ready to giveaway.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
White! Definitely white ones! My mum and I had a long quarrel about lights about five years ago. We only decorate our tree with lights and I must have candles burning on the tree on Christmas Eve and she wants electric lights so that the tree can be illuminated every evening. So we decided to put on white electric lights and candles that we light on Christmas Eve.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?
No we don’t. I saw one on a Christmas Market this year and it was hanging on a wall right next to the window where you order your drinks. Not so efficient because the height was perfect for dwarfs to kiss under it.

5. When do you put your decorations up?
I start decorating around December 1st. We do not decorate our whole apartment or the exterior. We only put up an arc with electric lights on in the window and I have some angel figures I put up. So nothing fancy!

6. What is your favorite Holiday dish?
I would say there is nothing better during Christmas time than “Panettone” the Italian cake that is traditionally eaten during Christmas time. It is so wonderfully fluffy and just tastes so delicious. I could eat tons of it each year and maybe I do but it clearly is my most favorite dish, dessert, cake during Holiday season.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
My favorite memory is Christmas Eve. We put up our tree in our living room and the door has a frosted glass window. When I woke up as a kid there was always wrapping paper covering the door and a cotton ball sealed the keyhole. My mum always told me that the angels were working behind the door and that we should not disturb them. When I am thinking about it now, I have the feeling that my parents were never helping the angels. I really enjoyed Christmas Eve as a kid because that day my parents played a lot with me. My dad and I set up my Lego train and played basically all day, or they read me stories, or we played with my Barbie dolls. I am not sure if my memory is mixing different days into one but I always had the feeling that is was an amazing day.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I don’t know really when I learned that my parents put up the tree and decorated it but two years ago I received a letter from an angel telling me that one of my present will be delivered a little later – so maybe there are angels out there somewhere.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Yes! We do celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve so we open our presents and have a huge dinner. If you ask anybody here in Austria they will always tell you that Christmas is on the 24th of December. On Christmas Day we normally visit my grandpa and meet with my dad’s sisters and their families. So Christmas Day is family day for me.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
We put up many different and colourful balls. When I was little we had candy up too but we stopped that when I was about 13 years old. Since then we always had colorful trees.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
LOVE IT! Snow is so beautiful! Austria is a skiing paradise so we basically need the snow for tourism. But there are many people that hate snow specially here in Vienna because it tend to get mushy, ugly and grey but I love it. Mum and I have this tradition that we take a walk during the first snowfall and I think everything turns magical when it snows.

12. Can you ice skate?
Of course! Well, I haven’t done it for some years now but if it is true and you can ice skate after you learned it once than I can. Maybe I should try it again because I really loved it and there is a wonderful ice rink each year in front of our city hall in the winter.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
I am fairly sure that BOOKS is the right answer but I got so many wonderful gifts during the years that I really don’t know my all-time favorite right now.

14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Spending time with my family and friends! And I love to cuddle up on the couch after Christmas and start reading books. That is mostly how I spend my time between Christmas and New Year's.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
On Christmas Eve we always have one special kind of ice cream since I was a kid and that is really delicious.

16. What is your favorite Holiday tradition?
My friends and I have this amazing tradition that we meet up each year on the 23rd of December in our bar to celebrate Christmas together. We don’t give presents to each other anymore but we spend time together. After school we kind of lost touch with some and we don’t see each other as often anymore but we regularly meet at our Christmas party. I just love this tradition and spending time with people I love is the most important thing for me all year long.

17. What tops your tree?
An angel!

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
I need to say giving because I am always curious if I got the right thing, if my mum doesn’t have this book already, if my dad likes his present, etc. I love buying gifts and I love giving them away and if it wouldn’t be so expensive I would buy more gifts for more people because sometimes I see something in a store that clearly yells at me: “I belong to … (insert name you want)!”

19. Candy Canes: Yuck or Yum?
Yum! Sooooo sweet and traditionally too much to eat but once a year I enjoy it!

20. Favorite Christmas show?
Can I name a film too? For me watching “Love….actually” is part of Christmas time. I love this film and Hugh Grant and Colin Firth are so adorable in it. Huge fan of both!

21. Saddest Christmas Song?
Christmas is a happy time. Happy, happy, happy! So I don’t listen to sad Christmas songs or at least there is none popping up in my head right now.

22. What is your favorite Christmas song?
Maybe it is “The most wonderful time of the year”. Especially the “Take 6” version of it. Or the whole Michael BublĂ© Christmas album. Especially “All I Want For Christmas Is You”,  “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and “Cold December Night”.
